President Mohamed Nasheed has said that the full advantage of women’s contribution to the growth of a country could only be achieved by eliminating gender inequalities in the society. The President made this remark while speaking in regard to the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, being marked today.

In his weekly radio address delivered this morning, the President noted that the perception of a higher status for women in the Maldivian society, compared to other SAARC member countries, was indeed in contradiction to the actual number of women’s representation in leading positions in the Maldives.

Noting that half of a country’s population consists of women, President Nasheed underscored the importance of women’s contribution to the development and rapid growth of a country. Further, the President called on members of the parliament for quick passing of the proposed Domestic Violence Bill.

President Nasheed also highlighted the recent heavy rainfall experienced in the southern atolls of the Maldives. Speaking in this regard, the President called for non-partisan unity in the work against climate change.
