Underlining the government’s commitment to consolidate democracy, President Nasheed has said, this government viewed safeguarding freedom of expression as a prerequisite for the development of the islands, as well as the country.

 
Speaking in Lhaimagu of North Miladhunmadulu Atoll this morning, President Nasheed said progress was not possible when people’s freedoms were restricted.
 
Continuing in this regard, he said the democracy was the government’s first priority and development could not be achieved without safeguarding people’s liberties, their freedom of expression, and peaceful political activism.
 
The President said the government’s only aim was progress and improving people’s living standard and the only reason for consolidating democracy and local governance was fostering development.
 
He said the local council election to be held on February 5 would lay the foundations of people’s direct participation in development and governance.
 
In addition, the President also reiterated the importance of providing social protection to facilitate development.
 

Highlighting the achievements of the government in establishing a social protection system, the President said the government was able to provide health insurance for 135 residents of Lhaimagu and 42 people received the old age pension.
