Vice President Faisal Naseem has held discussions with key stakeholders on elevating the existing domestic and maritime safety standards, especially relating to fire hazards and ocean-related accidents.

During the virtual meeting held this afternoon, Vice President Faisal Naseem discussed fire and maritime safety protocols, underlining the importance of abiding by safety standards during the handling and storage of highly-flammable materials and dangerous goods. Accordingly, the Vice President instructed authorities to strictly monitor adherence to safety standards, to conduct regular public awareness campaigns on the topic, and to ensure the safety and security of all members of the public through the stringent implementation of all guidelines and procedures.

The stakeholders briefed the Vice President on ongoing efforts to follow fire safety standards and deliberated on the challenges barring proper implementation of these measures. They suggested numerous programmes to boost safety standards within the atolls and recommended the involvement of the Local Government Authority (LGA). They further suggested locations for these programmes including Male’ City Harbour and several other points of interest around the capital city where refuelling, handling and storage of fuel are common.

The meeting was attended by senior officials from Male’ City Council; Coast Guard and Fire and Rescue Services from the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF); Maldives Police Service (MPS); Maldives Ports Limited (MPL); State Electric Company Limited (STELCO); Fenaka Corporation; Housing Development Corporation (HDC); Maldive Gas; State Trading Organization (STO); and Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.
