Mohamed Shainee (PhD)
Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture

On 19th November 2013, Dr. Mohamed Shainee was sworn in as the Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture.
Born on 15th February 1976, Dr. Mohamed Shainee has over 10 years of experience in fisheries and marine resources sector. His last government portfolio was as an Advisor to the Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture in 2009. As an advisor he was providing technical and policy advice on mainly fisheries and marine resources management. In addition, he has served as a technical and managerial staff of the Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture from 1994 to 2008. During this period he held positions from Assistant Project Officer to Assistant Director General.
Dr. Mohamed Shainee has also served as a board director of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Plc. and Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Ltd. In the latter, Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Ltd., he served the company as the Managing Director.
Academically, Dr. Mohamed Shainee holds a Philosophiae of Doctorate in offshore aquaculture cage designing from Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, Norway. His thesis title was “Numerical and Experimental Investigation of a SPM Cage Concept for Offshore Mariculture”. He also holds a Master Degree in Marine Management from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada and a MSc. in Marine Technology from NTNU, Trondheim, Norway. Dr. Shainee completed his BEng.(Hons) in Marine Technology from the University of Plymouth, Plymouth, UK.
Dr. Mohamed Shainee has also been working as a national and international consultant in coastal, environmental and ocean engineering projects. His latest international consultancy was to design and dimension of an offshore aquaculture cage grid system in Seribu Islands, Indonesia. As an environmental consultant, Dr. Shainee has conducted over 20 Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) for coastal development and infrastructure projects in the Maldives.
