Road map announced for National Campaign to boost religious spirit and patriotism

As stated in this year’s Presidential Address, a special committee has announced the roadmap for the national campaign to be carried out to promote Islamic unity and history, and boost religious and national spirit, especially among students and youth. The announcement was made by the coordination committee of this programme, at a press conference held at the President’s Office.

The committee appointed by President Yameen includes Minister of Defence and National Security Adam Shareef, Minister of Education Dr Aishath Shiham, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Ahmed Ziyad, Minister of Home Affairs Azleen Ahmed, Chairman of the National Awards Committee Abdul Rasheed Hussain, Chief of Defence Force Major General Ahmed Shiyam, Chancellor of the Islamic University of Maldives Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, Chairman of Public Service Media Ibrahim Umar Manik, Managing Director of Public Service Media Ibrahim Khaleel, and Abdulla Farooq Hassan from Public Service Media.

The President has also appointed a technical committee consisting of professionals in various sectors, charged with carrying out all technical tasks during the national campaign. The programme is to be launched on Wednesday, 1st March 2017.

All ministries are responsible to carry out the activities regarding their respective sectors. In this regard, Ministry of Education will coordinate all activities involving school children, Ministry of Youth and Sports will coordinate all activities involving youth, Ministry of Islamic Affairs will coordinate all activities regarding Islamic unity. The Public Service Media will play a major role during the campaign. The President’s office will administer the campaign on overall.

Speaking at the press conference, the Defence Minister said that the programme initiated by President Yameen shows the importance given by the President in boosting patriotism, and reviving religious spirit in the nation building process, especially among youth and school children. He also stated that the first phase of the campaign will be carried out till the end of 2019, beginning from 1st March.

Briefing on the strategy for the campaign, the Defence Minister said that various activities will be carried out at different forums as part of the campaign, which mainly include focus groups for students and youth, poster drawing, and essay writing.

At the news conference, the Education Minister noted the importance given by the President to the social wellbeing of the citizens, along with the country’s economic development. She said that the administration puts in great effort to transform the Maldivian community into a developed and civilised community, with the participation of all citizens. In her statement, the Education Minister said that the campaign mainly targets youth and students as the administration considers it important to teach them to reflect on Islamic values and Maldivian customs in taking major decisions.

The Home Minister stated that President Yameen aims to restore patriotism of the country within the process of economic, urban and social development, especially during a time that the social fabric of the country was torn. He also expressed his gratitude to the President for this initiative to create a wholesome youthful generation. In his remarks, the Home Minister said that this will strengthen social justice of the country, grow brotherly bonds among the Maldivian people, reinstate values lost among youth population, and create public awareness on its importance. He also noted that this was the first national campaign of its kind being carried out in such a large scale.

Speaking at today’s news conference, the Islamic Minister noted the unfamiliarity among the people, about the heroes who have sacrificed their lives in defence of the religion. He also noted that this campaign would enable the public to be more aware of such important facts, and we can go back to being a “one family” community.
