The Maldives has pledged its support for Egypt’s candidature for the upcoming United Nations vote on Non-Permanent Membership of the UN Security Council for 2016-17.

The assurance of Maldives’ support was given on behalf of President Yameen, by Vice President Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Ghafoor, at a call on the Vice President by Special Envoy of the President of Egypt, His Excellency Hatam El Sayed Tageldin. The meeting was held this morning at the President’s Office.

Speaking at the meeting, the Vice President and the Special Envoy from Egypt exchanged views on the future course of bilateral relations between the two brotherly countries.

Recalling his recent memorable visit to Egypt, on the invitation by the Egyptian Government to attend the ceremonial inauguration of the New Suez Canal, Vice President Adheeb thanked the Egyptian Government for the warm welcome and generous hospitality that was extended to him. He congratulated President Sisi of Egypt for the successful completion of the mega project ahead of schedule, and emphasised the importance of the New Suez Canal in the future development of both Egypt and its friends and neighbours.

Special Envoy Tageldin conveyed, on behalf of President Sisi and the Egyptian Government and friendly people, deep concern over last week’s blast on the presidential speedboat, which led to the First Lady and others suffering injuries. He wished for her speedy and full recovery, and conveyed the solidarity of the Egyptian people at this time of concern for the President.

Special Envoy Tageldin delivered a letter to President Yameen, on behalf of President Sisi, in which the Egyptian Head of State detailed Egypt’s candidature for a Non-Permanent Seat in the UN Security Council for the upcoming term.
