President Dr Mohamed Waheed has condemned in the strictest terms, last evening’s attacks on three journalists. The President made this condemnation in a press statement today.
The three journalists attacked were News Head and Deputy CEO of Raajje TV Ibrahim Waheed, Deputy Editor of MBC Aishath Leeza, and MBC journalist Aminath Shani. Ibrahim Waheed, sustained serious injuries and is in critical condition. He is being treated in Sri Lanka.
In his statement, the President has assured that the government would not step back in bringing to justice, those responsible for this act of brutality.
The President expressed his concern for the attacks targeting journalists, in the midst of the political turmoil in the country. He stated that continuing such disgraceful acts would result in media freedom being challenged, and that there was a possibility of endangering the Maldives’ media.
In his statement, President Waheed called upon everyone to respect each other’s political views. He has also called on the media to encourage stability, unity and harmony in the country.
The President has assured that the government would take all the steps necessary to prevent further attacks on journalists.
